Holdrege Students Participate in 1st South Central NE Career Fair
March 18, 2008
The first ever South Central Nebraska Career Fair was held March 12, 2008 at the Ag Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. The event was developed in cooperation between the Holdrege Area Chamber of Commerce and members of the Holdrege and Loomis school districts. Sophomores from ESU 11 area schools were brought into Holdrege for sessions during which they could explore the occupations and businesses in the area through interactive booths, offering everything from a radio controlled tractor obstacle course, wiring for telecommunications, and mixing compounds like a pharmacist. The groups of students (about 100 each session) had 90 minutes to tour the booths at the Ag Center and ask questions of the presenting businesses/industries. The event was intended to help students explore career opportunities in the area and to connect education to interests and skills. The Career Clusters model developed by the Nebraska Department of Education was used to show students that, although we live in a predominantly agricultural area, the opportunities and vocational fields available to them are almost limitless. The program is part of an overall push by area schools to show students that they need to be investigating options for their future and considering how those options may influence the educational choices they make today.
