Second Graders Learn About Wetlands and Cranes

Trip to Rowe Sanctuary was a highlight!

Second grade students at Washington Elementary recently enjoyed a field trip to the Rowe Sanctuary near Gibbon, Nebraska to view sandhill cranes.  Prior to the trip, we learned about Nebraska’s wetlands.  An outstanding presentation was given by Michelle McCormick, an Education Assistant for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and the mother of two our students.   Nebraska has more wetlands than any other state.  They are known as “nature’s kidneys” and help filter out pollutants from our water system.   The students learned the importance of wetlands to us and many animals by participating in fun, hands-on science activities.

After our study of wetlands, we boarded the bus for our field trip to Rowe Sanctuary.   As we got closer to Kearney the children were excited to see hundreds of cranes feeding in the fields near the interstate.  Upon our arrival at the Rowe Sanctuary, our guide, Keanna Leonard, gave an excellent presentation about the sandhill cranes.   She even used one of our sponsors and a student to show the wingspan and height of a crane.  When the presentation was finished, Keanna took us on a trail which led to a viewing blind on the Platte River.  We were fascinated as she told us the tale of how the crane got his red patch.  She was a great storyteller!

All too soon our program was over and it was back to the bus to enjoy our sack lunches.  On our way home we took the scenic route, stopping the bus to view the cranes feeding in the fields along the roadside.  We saw cranes taking off, flying, landing and doing the mating dance.  What an awesome sight!  We even got to see a bald eagle soaring high overhead.  Did you know that people come from all over the world to view this gathering of migrating cranes that occurs only in this area of Nebraska?  Keanna shared with us that last year visitors came from all 50 states and 37 countries to view this amazing show.  We have been making this field trip for several years and it is a great experience every time.
