The week of March 3rd, Franklin Elementary students celebrated Dr. Seuss' 104th birthday and the joy of reading with a variety of Read Across America activities. They celebrated "election style" with three days of fun-filled patriotic activities. Students were able to go into voting booths to cast a vote for their favorite Golden Sower book. Students were also treated to "elected" guest readers from the Holdrege Board of Education and others from the Holdrege High School Student Council. Other activities for the week included a daily "Stop, Drop and Read" time while reading minutes were tallied and each class’s total minutes were displayed on a giant Dr. Suess hat in the hall. A final reading celebration was held on
Wednesday. Teachers participated in tug-o- war, patriotic musical chairs and pin the tail/trunk on the Democratic donkey or Republican elephant. The favorite Golden Sower books were announced and the students with the most reading minutes for the week in each class were recognized. The overall winners from each grade (Eli Dutcher - kindergarten, Amanda Helms and Madylin Fritsche – 1st grade, Cassidy Connell – 2nd grade, and Karli Hale – 3rd grade) earned the privilege to “silly string” Mr. Walker, the principal. Students from Mrs. Peterson’s first grade class accumulated the most reading minutes for the week and walked away with patriotic bomb pops.
