Of all the things our third grade class has learned this year, the most rewarding has been writing to our pen pal Corporal David Lawing, who is in the United States Army. We have sent several letters and cards during the school year as well as homemade Christmas treats. We have talked about the importance of the men and women who serve in our armed forces. We have studied symbols of our country and learned what they stand for.
The most rewarding and exciting part was when Corporal Lawing visited our class. There was much excitement in the classroom as everyone anticipated his arrival. The class made a welcome sign, red, white, and blue decorations, Uncle Sam hats, and several students brought treats. Many questions were asked. David told us that we were very fortunate to be children here and not in Iraq. He said that they are rebuilding their schools and most children don’t have school supplies. The students were proud to show what they know about our country and express to him their appreciation of the work our men and women do for our country. Everyone was disappointed when our day ended and David had to go home We hope that our experience will remind you to remember our service men and women throughout the year.
