Guidance Office and Scholarships

ELKS TEENAGER OF THE MONTH - Seniors!  Application forms are available in the Guidance Office or download here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Applicants are judged on scholarship, character, leadership, service and citizenship.  Selected Monthly.  A "Teenager of the Month" student will be selected for each month, September through May.  At the Elks banquet in May a cash award and certificate will be presented to each months winners one boy and one girl, and a special cash award to the "Teenager of the Year" selected from the boy and girl "Teenager of the Month."

The CHRISTIAN CONNECTOR provides a FREE Christian college information service as well as a $2500 Christian college scholarship drawing.  Simply log onto www.christianconnector.com for information on financial aid and admissions tips, as well as the free college information form.  Each student who completes the request form on their site is automatically entered in our $2500 Christian college scholarship drawing.  This scholarship can be used at any Christian accredited college in the U.S. or Canada.

MIDWEST STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM (MSEP) is open to students who will be attending college in Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, or Wisconsin.  Not all institutions and programs participate in the MSEP.  Each participating institution determines a student’s eligibility for admission in the program.  Awards vary; each MSEP student attending a designated out-of-state institution receives at least a 10 percent reduction in their tuition.  In all programs, the cost to the MSEP student is lower than regular nonresident tuition. Amounts and dates vary.  More information is available using the MSEP Access Navigator at http://msep.mhec.org or check in the Guidance Office for more information.  Apply as soon as possible.

DELTA KAPPA GAMMA – PHI CHAPTER is offering a $250 scholarship to any female high school senior or female college student enrolled in education who has not previously received the scholarship.  Applicant must have attended a high school in the Phi Chapter area (Elwood, Holdrege, Alma, Southern Valley, Minden, Axtell, Loomis, Franklin, Wilcox-Hildreth).  Selection will be based on a personal statement, letters of recommendation and class rank.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out. Application must be received by March 12, 2010

The CENTRAL NEBRASKA SENIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION is awarding scholarships to graduating seniors from the Central Nebraska area, which is bordered by Ainsworth, Franklin, McCook, and York.  They are offering two scholarships of $1000 each for one male and one female.  All applicants will be evaluated primarily on golf involvement and achievement.  Extracurricular activities and scholastic achievement are secondary.  Applications and Golf History forms are available in the Guidance office and must be received by March 15, 2010.

NEBRASKA COACHES ASSOCIATION (NCA) is offering the FARM BUREAU SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD.  Several scholarships will be awarded to the students who rank in the top 25% of their class, have been a 2 year participant in 2 sports, and have earned a varsity letter in 2 sports.  The students must have at least an ACT of 24.  A letter of recommendation from a coach is required.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can down load by clicking here.  The typewriter tool has been activated so that you can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out. The applications are due March 26, 2010.

CONESTOGA MALL COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP – This $500 scholarship will honor the achievements of students who have helped to make their school and community a better place by their participation in activities designed to achieve that goal.  The winning candidate will have maintained as high a scholastic level as deemed within their capability while participating in activities dedicated to improving the quality of life in their school or community.  These activities can be self-initiated or of school or community origin, such as:  music, drama, student government, scouting, volunteer work, etc.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Beginning March 1st applications will be available at the Conestoga Mall office and customer service, also available on their web site www.shopconestogamall.com.  No applications will be accepted prior to March 1st.  All applications must be received at the Conestoga Mall by closing hours on March 31, 2010.  NO EXCEPTIONS!!

The HOLDREGE FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES have released their scholarship for 2010 graduates in Phelps County of Nebraska.  The $500 scholarship has a March 31, 2010 deadline.  Applicants must be enrolled or in the process of enrolling full time in an accredited institution of higher education; public or private university, college, or technical school.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.

KEARNEY AREA SEWING GUILD SCHOLARSHIP – The Kearney Area Sewing Guild will award two student scholarships in the amount of $250 each to candidates wishing to pursue a career in Family Consumer Science or a related study in clothing or textiles.  Applicant must have a 2.5 high school GPA and be accepted to a Community College or University for the 2010-2011 school year.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.  Completed applications must be received by March 31, 2010.

EASTERN STAR SCHOLARSHIP - Concordia Chapter #97 – will award two scholarships for $500.  The criteria used in selection: 1) need 2) potential for completing education 3) scholastic & leadership qualities.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download by clicking here.  The typewriter tool has been enabled so that you can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Applications need to be received by Eastern Star by April 1, 2010.

HOLDREGE MUSIC BOOSTERS BARBARA EDWARDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Holdrege Music Boosters offers a $500 scholarship to a Holdrege High School senior for outstanding achievement in high school music.  Winner will be announced at the Honors Night Convocation.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Due to the Guidance Office by April 1, 2010.

GATEWAY FARM EXPO SCHOLARSHIPapplicant must be a graduating senior from a Buffalo, Kearney, Dawson, Phelps, Sherman, Harlan or Franklin County high school, or be a resident of the fore said counties.  A student completing home study at a level to enter college or who has received a GED during the current calendar years is also eligible as long as they meet all other criteria.   The applicant must be planning to enroll full time (12 hours or more) in an accredited, tax-exempt college or university (including trade and technical schools) and pursuing a degree or certificate in agriculture which shall include Production Agriculture, Agri-Business and Finance, and related fields.  The $1000 scholarship will be awarded at the beginning of the applicants second year of higher learning after proof of successful completion of their first year.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download by clicking here.  The typewriter tool has been activated so that you can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Completed applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2010.

KIWANIS OF HOLDREGE SCHOLARSHIP – Four $500 scholarships will be awarded to a graduating senior from a Phelps County school.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download by clicking here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Application deadline is April 1, 2010.

LINCOLN BUILDERS BUREAU EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – Member company employees and their children can apply for a $750 annual scholarship sponsored by the Lincoln Builders Bureau.  To be eligible: 1) applicants must be an employee of a Lincoln Builders Bureau member company, or the child of an employee; 2) applicants must be enrolled, or planning to enroll as an undergraduate in the upcoming year of an accredited college or trade school with a focus of construction science.

     Awards will be based primarily on academic performance, work experience, community involvement, and career goals.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.  Completed applications must be received by April 1, 2010.

The LOWER REPUBLICAN NATURAL RESOURCE DISTRICT is offering two $1000 scholarships for students studying in a natural resource related field.  Applicants must have permanent residence in the Lower Republican NRD.  Scholarships are available to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year college students.  Applicants must attend college in Nebraska and be registered full-time at their college.  A Short essay explaining why you are interested in and should receive this scholarship and what your major has to do with natural resources is part of the application.  Application is due to the NRD Office in Alma by April 1, 2010.

SOUTHERN PUBLIC POWER DISTRICT is offering a $1000 scholarship to an individual who plans to begin a 2-year utility line study program at an accredited school.  The scholarship applicant must currently reside within Adams, Franklin, Hall, Hamilton, Kearney, Merrick, or Phelps Counties in Nebraska, and agree to complete a 12-week summer internship with Southern in cooperation with the school attended.  Half of the scholarship ($500) will be paid directly to the recipient following the successful completion of the first year of the utility line study program and the second half will be awarded following graduation from the program.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.  The application must be postmarked by April 1, 2010.

ST. JOHN COMMANDERY #16, KNIGHTS TEMPLAR of McCook NE is awarding five $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors from area schools.  Selection criteria to be considered: citizenship, morals, scholarship, community activities, leadership, general deportment, and need.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.  Applicant must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA.  Applications must be received by April 1, 2010.

The UNIVERSITY of NEBRASKA EXTENSION-LINCOLN OFFICE IN PHELPS COUNTY administers the following scholarships:      (Applications are available in the guidance office.)

  • The PHELPS COUNTY 4-H FOUNDATION is offering one $1000 and five $500 scholarships to past or present members of Phelps County 4-H.  An “out of county” scholarship committee shall select the six winners. Applications are due in the Phelps County Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. April 1, 2010.
  • The PHELPS-GOSPER LIVESTOCK GROWERS ASSOCIATION in cooperation with the HOLDREGE VET CLINIC is offering one $500 scholarship to a high school senior in Phelps or Gosper Counties whose parents are Association members or employees of a P-G Livestock Growers member firm.  Applications are due in the Extension Office by April 1, 2010.

The NEBRASKA COOPERATIVE COUNCIL EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP 

PROGRAM in Honor of Dr. Michael S. Turner for the 2010-11 Academic Year

  • Up to five $950 scholarships to students at the UNL College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources (CASNR).  One scholarship will be awarded to an incoming student and the balance to upperclass students with a major in agricultural business/economics.
  • One $650 scholarship to a student at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTC) at Curtis with a major of business/management or ag production systems with the business option.
  • One $650 scholarship to an upperclass student at Chadron State College with a major or minor in agribusiness.

Eligibility Requirements – Scholarships will be awarded to sons/daughters of a parent/legal guardian who has been an active, member, director, or employee for at least the prior three years of a cooperative which has been a member in good standing of the Council for the past five years.

JOHNY BAXTER CARRIAGE HOUSE FOUNDATION AUTOMOTIVE SCHOLARSHIP – The Foundation is offering six $1000 grants to students pursuing training in an automotive related field at a Nebraska Community College.  Applicants must be enrolling in an Automotive Related Study.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office and are due to the Carriage House Foundation no later than Friday, April 2, 2010.

GLENWOOD TELEPHONE MEMBERSHIP CORPORATION offers high school seniors six $500 scholarships.  The student, their parents, or guardian must be a recipient of GTMC services (Telephone, Internet, Long Distance, and/or Cable TV).  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or on their webpage at www.gtmc.net.  Applications must be received in their office by April 2, 2010.

FUNK’S LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP – Is a $500 scholarship available to a Funk area high school senior.  Selection will be based on attendance, character, need, work and activities.  Preference will be given to those who are going into a field of agriculture or technical area, and can demonstrate how this scholarship will benefit them in completing their goals.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download by clicking here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Applications are due April 5, 2010.

UNL’S PHI DELTA KAPPA CHAPTER 15 is offering two $250 scholarship opportunities to high school seniors planning to become elementary, middle level, secondary classroom, special education, or English language learner (ELL) teachers.  Other scholarships worth over $1000 are also available at www.pdkintl.org/

They also offer two $250 scholarships to college students who have declared an education major; planning to become an elementary, middle level, secondary classroom, special education, or English language learner (ELL) teachers.  PDK is a professional honorary for educators that fosters service to the greater community, research, leadership, and scholarship toward enhancing education.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, April 9, 2010.

CHRISTIAN HOMES of Holdrege is offering the CHRISTIAN HOMES CARE COMMUNITY NURSING SCHOLARSHIP.  Students must be pursuing a nursing degree.  Each scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of any high school in Phelps County.  The scholarship will be for one year in the amount of $300.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Due to the Guidance Office by April 12, 2010.

HOME FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN will award one $500 scholarship to a graduating senior of each of the following schools; Holdrege, Loomis, and Bertrand High Schools.  Requirements are:  a GPA of 2.0 or higher, a short essay on your future goals and why you would like to be considered for this scholarship.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Applications are due by April 14, 2010.

CENTRAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP – This scholarship is available for current junior and senior high school students interested in taking a summer course at Central Community College.  Students must attend a high school in the CCC 25 county service area.  This scholarship was previously known as the “Three for Free” scholarship and has new guidelines!  The award is based on application/review process; it is no longer first come, first served.  The award is valued up to $150 in the form of tuition.  Applications for this award will be available on March 9th at CCC Admissions Offices, Learning Center locations, and via the CCC website, www.cccneb.edu/Summer$. From the CCC website, you can fill out the form before printing.  Deadline to apply is April 15, 2010. Award letters will be sent to students the week of April 19th.  If awarded the scholarship, students will need to be registered for a summer course prior to May 11, 2010.

The HOLDREGE TENNIS ASSOCIATION is offering the JADE JOHNSON MEMORIAL TENNIS SCHOLARSHIP – To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must have played tennis for Holdrege High School for at least two years.  The amount of the award is $500.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Due to the Guidance Office by April 15, 2010.

The NEBRASKA COOPERATIVE COUNCIL EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM in Honor of Dr. Michael S. Turner for the 2010-11 Academic Year

SWANSON RUSSELL ASSOCIATES, the largest marketing communications firm in Nebraska is offering the Gus Swanson Memorial COMMUNICATIONS SCHOLARSHIP, a $500 scholarship to a senior who will attend a Nebraska College or University and major in Advertising, Marketing, Mass Communications, Communication Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, or Graphic Design/Desktop Publishing.  A marketing strategy essay is required with the application.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office or on their Web site at www.swansonrussell.com.  Must have a 3.25 GPA or above.  Completed applications must be received by April 15, 2010.

UNK -- MR. & MRS. RALPH NYLANDER SCHOLARSHIP – These scholarships are for students who were residents of Phelps County at the time of graduation from high school and they must attend UNK.  This scholarship is totally based on financial need.  Amounts vary depending on need.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office and at the UNK Financial Aid Office or you can download by clicking here.  You can fill out the application on the computer before printing it out.  Applications must be postmarked no later than April 16, 2010.

The LPGA FOUNDATION has three 2010 scholarship opportunities available for female high school seniors who have played golf during high school.  1) The Dinah Shore Scholarship is one award of $5000, must be pursuing a college education, but NOT playing collegiate golf; 2) The Marilynn Smith Scholarship will award five scholarships in the amount of $1250, must plan to play golf in college; 3) The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship is a need-based scholarship in the amount of $1250 to be awarded to a young woman from a recognized minority background who will be pursuing a full-time course of study and playing collegiate golf at an accredited college or university in the United States.  Applications are available at www.lpgafoundation.org.  Completed applications must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2010.

UNK’s SIGMA PHI EPSILON FRATERNITY SCHOLARSHIP – The Nebraska Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity in Kearney is offering a $1,000 Balanced Man Scholarship to an outstanding freshman male entering the University of Nebraska at Kearney.  Students applying for the Balanced Man Scholarships are in no way obligated to join Sigma Phil Epsilon.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Completed applications must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2010.

UNL’s ALPHA GAMMA NU ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPThe Alpha Gamma NU Fraternity is offering scholarships in the amount of $500 to young men who will be freshman at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.  This scholarship recognizes young men from Nebraska who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.  Applications are due May 31, 2010
