Creative Problem Solving is Lots of Fun!
January 15, 2010
Students in grades two through six have the opportunity to participate in hands-on creative problem solving activities thanks to help from Mr. Tim Burke, Director of Gifted Education at Educational Service Unit #11. Mr. Burke visits classrooms six times per year directing the students in the problem solving activities.
This week fourth graders enjoyed a session on random flight. Students were divided into groups and they were instructed to make a device out of the provided materials that, when dropped, would glide as far as possible. Students could not launch their device, but simply had to drop it while standing on a chair. Mr. Burke then took measurements and calculated the winners based upon the longest distance. Mr. Burke provided them with newspaper, copy paper, paper towels, paper clips and mailing labels for the construction of their device. Each group experimented with several designs.
Students always look forward to Mr. Burke's visits!
