The PTO Helps HMS Students Earn Rewards For Reading
by Betty Bricker
September 07, 2010
The Middle School Parent/Teacher Organization has donated $500 to Holdrege Middle School to start up an Accelerated Reader Store. The AR Store will offer students rewards for reading and successfully completing a short comprehension quiz over a book they have chosen to read. With Accelerated Reader, students select books at their reading level, therefore this program is individualized so that every student has an opportunity to be successful. Each book is worth a certain number of points (determined by AR) and each student will have a certain number of points to acquire for each quarter. Students will be allowed to use the points that they have earned to purchase rewards from the store. Items will range from small point items to larger items for those students who exceed their reading goal. We hope that these incentives will encourage and reward reading. Presenting the check on behalf of the PTO is Jeanne Wilke, President of the HMS PTO and accepting is Betty Bricker, HMS Media Specialist who will organize and run the store.
